"Sydney Parkinson_Painter at the HMS Endeavour".

Captain James Cook
The first voyage of the Captain James Cook, was an expedition around the south Pacific Ocean, aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. There were two naturalists at this travel: Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. They commissioned to an artist the task of painting and drawing all specimens they found. The artist was Sydney Parkinson that inicially created completed watercolors of each new discover and finally (due to the hundred numbers of specimens) resorted to sketching the sheer number of animals and plants.
He never come back, he died at sea on the way to Cape Town of dysentery contracted at Princes' Island off the western end of Java. Banks paid his outstanding salary to his brother.
