"The Unknown parts of Africa".

The chart reveals something of an incommensurability between a known shoreline of coastal settlement and an interior, that was oddly perpetuated through the 19th century, where its limited notion of terrestrial coverage gained colonialist ends.  For printed maps of the mapping of continent limited to coastal African ports to emptiness of the mapped interior–without any acknowledgement of local toponomy–in maps created the sort of “large, empty spaces” .

Las cartas marinas revelan la diferencia entre una costa conocida, llena de asentamientos costeros y el interior, que se mantiene desconocido hasta llegar al siglo XIX, donde el limitado conocimiento del interior de África adquirió fines colonialistas. Para los mapas impresos de cartografía de continentes, se limitan a puertos africanos ribereños y a un vacío del trazado interior.
